Carbon Hill finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Carbon Hill finished seventh in Class 3A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bulldogs won as many games as in any season since 2006. The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1999 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, the Carbon Hill football program has struggled with a record of 11-69. Over the past 25 seasons, Carbon Hill has not won much with a record of 73-171. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 3A and 335th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2006. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Scott Curd who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 4-16 over the past two seasons at Carbon Hill. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Curd. Coach Curd's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 16-64 (20.0%). The Carbon Hill Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region four during the 2018 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. The Bulldogs open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Good Hope on Friday, August 24 at G.W. Keith Stadium. Last year the Good Hope Raiders finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 4A region six. The Raiders ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hanceville by a score of 29-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Carbon Hill and Good Hope have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-8-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2009 with Good Hope winning by a score of 42-19. Carbon Hill returns 3A All-State linebacker Alex Atkins. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return receiver Carson McGinnis.
